How many grafts do you need?

What is a graft?

A graft is a tiny piece of skin containing hair follicles. On average, a single graft contains 2 to 3 individual hairs. When clinics talk about the number of grafts, they are referring to the number of extractions, not the number of individual hairs.

Assessing Your Norwood Scale

The Norwood Scale is the standard classification system used to measure male pattern baldness. Your graft requirement directly correlates with your stage on this scale:

  • Norwood 2-3 (Receding Hairline): Typically requires 1,500 to 2,500 grafts to restore a dense, natural hairline.
  • Norwood 4 (Crown Thinning): Usually requires 3,000 to 4,000 grafts to cover both the frontal area and the crown.
  • Norwood 5-6 (Extensive Baldness): Often requires 4,000 to 5,000+ grafts. In severe cases, this may need to be split across two separate surgeries to protect the donor area from over-harvesting.

The Importance of Donor Capacity

While you might want 5,000 grafts, your donor area (the back of your head) dictates what is safely possible. Over-harvesting can lead to a patchy, moth-eaten appearance in the back of your head. A good surgeon will prioritize a natural look over simply maximizing graft counts.
